The familiar blue bins for toy donations will return to the Davis campus Dec. 1-11. To help brighten the day of a Yolo County child, just deposit a new, unwrapped toy in one of the bins.

The food drives held each fall on campus have taken on additional importance this year as members of the UC Davis community face uncertainty over whether federally funded food assistance will continue, and there are numerous ways for faculty and staff to help.

UC Davis-backed projects to help students, children and pets have returned just in time for the holidays.

Stuff the Bus

Unitrans will park a vintage double-decker bus at the Davis Food Co-op from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 14 and ask the community to “Stuff the Bus” with food and other essential items for The Pantry, a campus space that helps students experiencing food insecurity.

“The Pantry is looking to sustain student and employee well-being, so they don’t have to worry about their next meal,” said Andie Tarabzooni, director of The Pantry.

HOLIDAY HELPING: 3 Ways to Support Food Drive

The Mail Services Holiday Food Drive is back for a 19th year, and there are numerous ways to contribute before the Nov. 22 deadline.

The first is the simplest: Leave nonperishable food items with your outgoing campus mail and Mail Services will take care of the rest, ensuring the gift gets to the ASUCD Pantry. UC Davis Health employees can also take part, with donations going to the Pantry at UC Davis Health.

Update Dec. 5: Between the football game and two basketball games, cross-Causeway rivalry contests between UC Davis and Sacramento State drew 750 pounds of food donations this year.

Separately, the women’s basketball game on Sunday (Dec. 10) will feature a toy drive organized by the Coalition for African Diaspora Student-Athletes.

Updated 1 p.m. Nov. 29: The campus community is invited to sponsor gifts for the children of UC Davis students through a holiday drive being conducted by the Women’s Resources and Research Center. Interested participants are asked to sign up by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 30), by selecting the number of children and age ranges they’d like to sponsor.
